Baldasare Castiglione

  • Baldasare Castiglione was born December 6 1478-1529 in Casatico near Mantua (Italy). Baldasare was a diplomat, author, and a courtier.He was educated in Latin, Greek and received knightly training at the court on Ludovico sforza in Milan. 1494 at the age of 16 he began humanist studies in Milan, which would eventually inform his future writings. In 1499 after the death of his father he left his studies and when he was 15 he went to Milan to succeed his father as the head of their noble family.

  • In 1516 he went back to Mantua, married Ippolita Torelli also from a noble family but she died 4 years after their marriage. Baldasare Castiglione was a great man and a big influence in the Italian renaissance. The Renaissance was a cultural movement began by scholars called humanists, who promoted the revival of the human-centered literature and philosophy of ancient Greece and Rome as well as new translations of biblical texts. During the time of the war he became a solider for a short period of time. Throughout his life he lived mostly in Milan and Ilrbino.

  • Baldasare became a diplomat after he got injured and he stop being a solider.During his stay at the court of llrbino he wrote a book called "The book of the Courtier". When he was 18,in 1496 he was sent to the court of Lodovico at Milan.The court was only for intellegent people like, Baldasare. In 1506 he wrote a drama called"Tirsi".

  • Baldasare book was huge and a success. It was published in 1528 but, it was wriiten from 1513 to 1516. Castiglione classical learning is blended into the conversation of the courtiers and ladies.

  • The book ends on an very elevated note with a long speech about love by the humanist scholar Pietro Bembo (later a cardinal)
  • The Book of the Courtier caught the "spirit of times "and was soon translated into Spanish,German, French, and English. One hundred and eight editions were published between 1528 and 1616.
  • At the age of 50 he passed away from a violent fever in Toledo, Spain February 2 1529
